artist statement
Even as a young child I was a collector of sorts of many things, seashells, rocks, dried flowers, oddities or trinkets from far away lands. Many of these objects were collected to freeze in time for me a moment or journey much like someone would take a photograph. Unfortunately for those who live with me, must also live with the objects that I have been collecting for so long. Each one of these objects disseminates such life and zeal, when I hold them in my hand, taking me back to a different time and place. This is so much what I want to create. I feel moved to make powerful objects whether they be functional or not. I am inspired by the world around me. The minute perfection that nature provides for a seedpod or the delicate connection between a berry and it’s stem; I find inspiration everywhere. I am constantly trying to create works that transmit the same feeling or essence I find in other objects, this is my drive.
Not afraid of Color, I employ rich pigments and enjoy matching color combinations; each color carrying a mood or personality that produces another layer in my creations. Reminiscent of things found in nature primarily botanical forms, I seek to create works that suggest my own invention all together.
I strive to construct complex forms that move away from the tools I used to make them, whether that be the wheel, molds or apparatuses. Clay is soft and allows for me to push, pull, poke and smooth away. Once finished the shapes are still fluid visually, but frozen when touched. The forms are then created as if born this way or grown from a seed into this shape or existence. Obsessed with the tactile properties that my collection of objects have, I desire for my works to also give this profound need to be touched.
