The ancient Egyptians believed in an elaborate burial ritual that incorporated mummification of the human form to preserve the body so later it would reunite with the deceased in the after life. Canopic jars were used to preserve and protect precious organs that also would come back to the individual in the after life. Each burial had four jars. In earlier years the jars were simple with simple lids. During the middle period, human heads resembling the deceased were created in the lid form and in the later period animal symbols were used to represent The Four Sons of Horus.
